We were going to go to Havelock but still, there was a time in the ferry. So we thought of going to the Cellular Jail and went to roam there. It opens at 8 am but tickets are only given till 3:30 pm, so that the jail premises can be evacuated by 5 pm.

 

The cellular jail is a silent witness prison of souvenir of untold cruel torture of the British state and the courageous defiance in revolutionaries against it. This jail has been named as Cellular jail according to the special texture of its closet of 13 × 7  of 693 dungeons. Its construction started in 1893 to 1906 at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh. Later on, this prison was opened for the general public in honor of these freedom fighters. This national monument is a vivid symbol of India's glorious history.

 

Just entering the jail, the administrative block is there. This two-story building was used for administrative work. The office of the jailor and the assistant jailor was on the first floor and the lower floor was used for storage. Presently, a portrait exhibition of freedom fighters has been held here. The Netaji gallery and library are on the other side.

 

After coming out of this, there comes Freedom flame which keeps on burning continuously in honor of the martyrs. When getting out of the gate, some lines are written here. I can't understand how to praise those four lines after reading them. You also read-

You listen, the land of here has sacrifice in each particle.

 

During the second world war, the Japanese had seized here and driven the Britishers away. During that time, they killed hundreds of people here. Those killed in two villages have also their graves. The prison building is in front of this flame in which cells are made from one side and, there are many chairs keeping in the center ground. These chairs are used for the light and sound shows in the evening. Many people gather here to watch this show. We could not watch this show as we have to leave for Havelock today.

 

After this, we started moving towards the prison cells. On the first floor, there also had a chamber of the great martyr Veer Savarkar, so we moved towards that. All the rest cells are the same. Only a wooden bed, blanket, iron plate, and earthen pot were allowed in every cell. There was no toilet. For this work, the prisoners were taken out at a certain time in the morning and evening. After locking the prisoners in their prison cells at 6 pm in the evening, they were allowed only to go out at 6 am in the morning. It was called solitary confinement.
